American Rivers is thrilled to announce that nominations for America’s Most Endangered Rivers® of 2025 are now open! America’s Most Endangered Rivers® is one of the best-known and longest-lived annual campaigns in the environmental movement. Each year since 1984, local river advocates have teamed up with American Rivers to use the campaign to influence key decisions, consistently scoring VICTORIES for rivers and the communities through which they flow.

The report spotlights ten rivers every year, drawing widespread media attention and mobilizing public action that results in success stories for rivers, clean water, and communities. For the 2025 report, which we will release on April 16, 2025, we will be highlighting the importance of river protection NOW and how our clean water relies on healthy rivers. The fight for our rivers is a fight for people, wildlife, and the planet and the time to take action is now.

We want your river to be nominated and get the recognition and support that it deserves.

We will select rivers based on the following criteria:

  1. The significance of the river to people, wildlife, and nature.
  2. The magnitude of threat to the river and its communities, especially in light of climate change and environmental injustice.
  3. A decision in the coming year that will impact the river’s fate.
