Kent Conservation and Preservation Alliance, in partnership with the Center for Environment and Society at Washington College, invites you to an evening lecture entitled “Delmarva Oasis” by internationally renowned author and lecturer Tony Hiss. The lecture will focus on the importance of preserving landscapes – such as the Delmarva Peninsula – to avoid an environmental crisis as critical as climate change.
Tony Hiss
An internationally known writer, lecturer, and consultant on restoring and preserving America’s cities and landscapes, Tony Hiss is the author of 14 books, including the award-winning The Experience of Place. He was a staff writer for The New Yorker for more than 30 years and is currently a visiting scholar at New York University.
Hiss’s next book, 50 by ’50, which will be published on Earth Day 2020, is about protecting half the North American landscape by 2050 in order to prevent the kind of mass extinction event that killed the dinosaurs. This is the world’s other great environmental crisis, as urgent as climate change. What happens on the Eastern Shore, Hiss told an overflow crowd at the Eastern Shore Land Conservancy’s annual conference last November, will be at the center of staving off this catastrophe. For those who missed his talk, make plans to attend the lecture at Washington College on February 20th at 7 pm in the Hynson Lounge. Seating is limited. This event is FREE but we ask that you RSVP via Eventbrite.
The National Park and Recreation Association has awarded Hiss its National Literary Award for a lifetime of “spellbinding and poignant” writing about “how our environments, modes of travel, and other aspects of the American landscape affect our lives.” “His words,” said the citation, “are often poetic, always real.”
