The Maryland Water Monitoring Council, in partnership with the Maryland Stream Restoration Association and Biohabitats Inc., is providing a free workshop that will focus on Maryland protocols used to assess the physical habitat of freshwater streams, with an emphasis on Maryland Biological Stream Survey (MBSS) protocols.
We’ll spend about 90 minutes indoors reviewing the protocols, data sheets, and presenting images of different stream conditions to give a basic calibration of habitat parameters. Then we’ll take a 10-minute hike to Davis Branch, break into separate groups and practice completing data sheets in the field.
Though the primary focus will be the MBSS protocols, we’ll also introduce EPA Rapid Bioassessment Protocols as well as a simpler procedure used by Maryland teachers and outdoor educators. Interested participants may be citizen science groups, volunteer monitors, teachers, students, or professionals looking for a new skill.
A continental breakfast will be provided. Waders or tall waterproof boots are recommended. The event will be held rain or shine.
