The Chesapeake Bay Foundation seeks a Maryland Oyster Gardening Assistant to assist CBF Oyster Restoration staff in Baltimore, MD, Shady Side, MD, Annapolis, MD and Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) is the largest regional non-profit conservation organization working solely to save the Bay. CONTEXT OF THE POSITION

The Maryland Oyster Gardening Assistant will assist Chesapeake Bay Foundation Oyster Restoration staff with several potential projects.  This is an outside field position. Applicants should be comfortable in and around the water and on small vessels.

Essential functions include:
• Assist CBF Oyster Restoration staff at CBF’s Oyster Restoration Center in Shady Side, MD and with the Great Baltimore Oyster Partnership in Baltimore, MD.
• Assist with oyster gardening workshops in Annapolis, Baltimore, Eastern Shore, Southern Maryland and Shady Side, MD.
• Help facilitate and organize workshop materials including wading in to retrieve oyster shell bags, handing out shell bags and materials to Maryland Oyster Gardeners and planting oyster spat-on-shell on local bodies of water.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

Successful candidate recent college graduates or aspiring professionals looking for experience in the environmental or conservation field who majored in environmental science, fishery science, aquaculture, marine affairs, or a related field. Self-initiative, the ability to work independently, as well as with a team and excellent written and oral communication skills are required. A candidate with experience with shellfish aquaculture and/or spat-on-shell is preferred.  We seek a creative thinker interested in learning about the Chesapeake Bay as well as furthering the Foundation’s mission to “Save the Bay”.

This is a paid position. The successful candidate will be hired for the beginning of the spring oyster gardening season, assist with spring oyster spat-on-shell returns and oyster plantings. This is a 6-week position, starting in May and ending mid-June. The successful candidate must have reliable transportation for travel to CBF’s headquarters in Annapolis, MD; Oyster Restoration Center in Shady Side, MD and locations around Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. Being available to work on weekends and evenings is a must. Must be able to lift at least 20 lbs.
