In Mallows Bay, more than 100 World War 1-era wooden vessels rest in the shallow bay -waters and along its shoreline marking one of the most curious yet important periods in the Nation’s maritime history. It’s an exciting year to be along this section of the Potomac! Mallows Bay and an adjacent area of the Potomac River are being considered for designation as a National Marine Sanctuary. Additionally, the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, in cooperation with MD DNR, will be launching a new water quality buoy for recreational and commercial users!

Bring a canoe, kayak or walk along the shore. Join local historians and archaeologists who will share the stories of Mallows as part of the cleanup activities. Notes & Special Issues The Mallows Bay site is generally open to most abilities and ages, although some may find challenges walking the shore and/or navigating the waters due to the obstacles presented by the ghost fleet remnants. Cleanup sites are available along the Park’s shoreline. For those with kayaks/canoes, additional shoreline sites require a brief (5-15 minute) trip from the boat ramp. We also anticipate that some small boats will be available to provide shuttle service to shorelines adjacent to the park for limited numbers of volunteers.
