The Oyster Recovery Partnership (ORP) is a 501 that (c)(3) non-profit organization that plans, promotes and implements science-based sustainable shellfish restoration, aquaculture and wild fishery activities.
A seasonal internship is available at ORP for a field technician position between mid-May and mid-August. The primary role of the intern is to document oyster-planting activities conducted by the oyster planting vessel, the Robert Lee. The position will be based in Cambridge, MD, where ORP has a field office at our partner facility, University of Maryland Horn Point Laboratory.
Responsibilities of the intern include:
- Operating Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping software (ArcGIS) to document daily planting locations and review and manage data
- Maintaining and deploying water quality monitoring equipment during daily planting activities
- Developing a special project to work on after daily plantings are completed or during times when plantings do not occur
Due to the amount of time the intern will spend on the water, previous boating experience is required. Previous experience with the mapping software ArcGIS, vessel navigational software, and GPS units is desired but not required. The intern is expected to meet the planting vessel early in the morning, therefore, reliable transportation is required.
When: The internship will begin mid-May and end mid-August of 2018.
Compensation and hours: Over the course of the 12 week internship, a $5400.00 stipend will be provided. The internship requires a commitment of at least 30 hours per week.
