Join us on the banks of the Thornton River at Pen Druid Brewery in Sperryville, Virginia as we release the results of the first ever Upper Rappahannock River Report Card. Special thanks to our co-hosts the Sperryville Community Alliance and Rappahannock Friends and Lovers of Our Watershed (RappFLOW).

Funded by the PATH Foundation and Northern Piedmont Community Foundation, this report will expand on the Middle Rappahannock River Report Card released in 2018 and analyzes 12 tributaries to the Rappahannock River in Fauquier, Rappahannock, and Culpeper Counties. We will feature a short presentation, poster and mingle session, and plenty of Q&A. This event is one of a three-part outreach series and will have a local focus on the stream and river segments in Rappahannock County.

Special thanks to the Rappahannock Rapidan Regional Commission, Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, John Marshall Soil and Water Conservation District, and Piedmont Environmental Council for their contributions to this report card.

The report metrics include:

  1. Public Health – addresses waterborne bacteria, fish consumption advisories and contaminated sites
  2. Land Use – land uses, BMPs, and conservation on a small-watershed level
  3. Stream Ecology – an in-depth look at aquatic ecology and riparian buffer condition
  4. Community Engagement – looks at access, education, and public awareness
