Dear Restoration Interested Parties,
American Rivers is excited to share with you some updates on new data and resources available to you related to dam removal!
2019 Dam Removal Database and Map
Our updated dam removal database and map are now available for your reference (see this blog for more info). Thank you to all who provided data, photos, and other information for this important update. Pulling this database together is truly a community effort, and we appreciate your help and support! The database (here) includes information on 1,722 dams that have been removed across the country since 1912. Most of those dams (1,476) were removed in the past 30 years. If you’re more of a map person, you can see the removals mapped here. In total, 90 dams were removed, 26 states (A RECORD!) removed dams, and 973+ upstream river miles were reconnected in 2019 through dam removal projects. Collectively, we are continuing to build momentum across the U.S. for removing dams. Let’s keep that momentum going in 2020!
If you are willing to help us spread the word about all of the great removals from 2019, our social media toolkit can be found here.
New River Restoration Tools and Resources Website
American Rivers is proud to share our newly revamped River Restoration Tools and Resources website! We invite you to go check out all of the great information that we provide about river restoration, plus we share success stories, photos, videos, and more. Our goal is to connect restoration practitioners, as well as the general public, to tools to help improve their work. We hope you find this to be a useful new resource and invite you to share it with other interested parties.
This is the first of several resources and workshops American Rivers and our partners will be rolling out as part of our multi-year Free Rivers campaign aimed at commemorating the 20th anniversary of the dam removal movement and bringing together some of the country’s leading dam removal experts to create a vision and shared plan of action to guide the next 10 years of our collective work.
Live Dam Removal Q&A
On Wednesday, February 26 at 9:30 AM ET, American Rivers’ Director of River Restoration, Serena McClain will be doing a LIVE Question and Answer session on all things dam removal on American Rivers’ Twitter page. We hope you will join and ask her some important questions on the future of dam removal!
