Washington College Department of Environmental Science and Studies adjunct teaching opportunities

The Department of Environmental Science & Studies at Washington College, a small liberal arts college in the Chesapeake Bay watershed on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, invites applications for up to two adjunct faculty positions to teach ENV 101: Introduction to Environmental Studies laboratories during the Fall 2022 semester. Lab sections are currently scheduled for Fridays from 10:30am-12:30pm and 1:30-3:30pm. Each lab is capped at 18 students. Laboratory adjuncts are expected to set up and break down their labs, grade assignments, and be available occasionally for student questions outside of lab time.  All laboratory materials and activities will be provided. Applicants should have a degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, or a related field. A valid driver’s license that is in good standing is required as there are several lab activities that require use of college vehicles to transport students to local field sites. The salary for teaching one lab is $2000 or $4000 for two labs to be paid out in biweekly installments over the Fall 2022 semester. The Department of Environmental Science & Studies at Washington College, a small liberal arts college in the Chesapeake Bay watershed on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, invites applications for an adjunct faculty member to develop and teach an upper-level environmental science course with laboratory during the Fall 2022 semester. The course is titled “ENV 294: Advancing Environmental Science” and may be designed as an in-person course or a hybrid course with online/remote lectures and a Tuesday 3:30-6:30pm face-to-face laboratory. The course is capped at 16 students, and the prerequisite for the course is Introduction to Environmental Studies.  While the content of the course can be tailored to the expertise of the adjunct faculty person, applicants who can provide students with experience in novel, hands-on field and/or data visualization techniques will be given preference. Areas of expertise that our students are particularly interested in include, but are not limited to, agriculture and sustainable food production, renewable energy, climate change, plants and fungi, and oceanography.  Courses that can weave in concepts of environmental justice and equity through environmental science topics are encouraged.

The college’s 4700-acre River and Field Campus and research vessel present many different ecosystems and field experiences for inclusion in teaching efforts. The salary for teaching this course will be $6000 to be paid out in biweekly installments over the Fall 2022 semester. Applicants should have a MS or PhD in Environmental Science or related field. PhD candidates will also be considered. College-level teaching experience and use of inclusive pedagogy is preferred.
