Resilience Manager – Elizabeth River Project

The Resilience Manager will prepare for and then ensure sound interpretive programs, well-coordinated research by partner universities collaborating with us, and smooth facility operations relating to Elizabeth River Project’s coming Pru & Louis Ryan Resilience Lab. This center is under construction for completion in 2023 on the waterfront in Norfolk, VA. The Lab will be a cutting-edge demonstration of environmental resilience for coastal urban cities.

  • During construction, the Resilience Manager will learn to operate and interpret the facility’s green systems, ranging from a green roof and living wall to a rainwater infiltration system that re-uses rain in the toilets and landscaping that demonstrates resilience with a living shoreline, native plantings and changing art and other displays. The Resilience Manager will plan a calendar of interpretive experiences, partner research by area universities and compatible programs for when the facility opens, giving special focus to equity and environmental justice.
  • After the facility opens, the Resilience Manager will manage interpretive education activities and workshops and coordinate the activities of multiple university and other partners conducting multi-disciplinary research and activities at the facility on environmental resilience and sustainability. The Resilience Manager will manage an operations budget for the facility and ensure sound operation of the green systems. The Resilience Manager may not have skills in all areas of diverse needs for the facility, but will have the ability to identify and work with others, whether contractors or staff or volunteers, to ensure these needs are met.

The right candidate thrives on new challenges and is energized by the opportunity to develop policies and procedures where none yet exist. Requires the knowledge of environmental sciences and the proven ability to interpret them for the public in simple, engaging ways. Preference for knowledge relating to coastal resilience and green infrastructures. Helpful but not required: Knowledge of native landscaping, events management, light carpentry, operation of workboats.
