Job Overview:
The Environmental Sustainability Intern supports an impactful climate change mitigation project under a Transform Howard Innovation Grant. Through the end of June, 2024, this project will aid EcoWorks in bringing together a unified approach for forest, stream and soil management that maximizes carbon storage, stormwater runoff reduction and improves the overall resiliency of our local ecosystems. We believe that we can pave the way for the next generation of green jobs programming that will implicitly need to address climate while simultaneously addressing biodiversity and water pollution.
The Environmental Sustainability Intern will support the development of a framework for EcoWorks’ service delivery and private property natural resource management that includes low tech, process-based approaches to environmental restoration activities. The work will be guided by our environmental consultant, Ecosystem Services, Inc, with implementation of restoration interventions by EcoWorks’ green jobs’ programs. Pre- and post-monitoring will be led by the Environmental Sustainability Intern.
Responsibilities & Duties:
● Conduct literature review and synthesis on the topics of forest resiliency, ecosystem
services and the relation of these topics to environmental restoration.
● Lead pre- and post-monitoring efforts of restoration activities; monitoring protocols will be
determined by Ecosystem Services, Inc.
● Support implementation of restoration interventions with EcoWorks’ crews as time allows.
● Support communication and outreach efforts related to project including drafting blogs and
developing social media content.
● Draft a guidance document / handbook for use by Howard EcoWorks and property owners
that guides the user through a unified approach for natural resource evaluation and
implementation to support ecosystem resilience.
Qualifications:
● Undergraduate or graduate degree in environmental science, restoration, and/or
conservation or pursuing a degree in these fields
● Proficiency with office software such as Google Suite, Microsoft Office, and email
● Excellent written and verbal communication skills
● Ability to conduct research and synthesize data
● Passion for environmental conservation and restoration and climate mitigation
● Self-starter and able to work independently
● Organized with attention to detail
●Ability to/from travel to field sites
Hours & Compensation:
● Stipend of $2,500
● Expected duration (flexible): 10/1/2023-5/31/2024 – Part-time, approx. 15 hours/month
