If this sounds like you, Montgomery Parks Horticulture, Forestry, and Environmental Education Division, located in Gaithersburg, Maryland is the place you want to be!   We are currently seeking a dynamic, highly professional Inventory Arborist.
The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) is seeking an Inventory Arborist to work within Montgomery Parks Department. This position will work in the Arboriculture Section, part of the Horticulture Forestry and Environmental Education Division to collect and update data on the Montgomery Parks landscape tree inventory.  This tree inventory is used to help guide tree management decisions such as tree planting, tree species selection for planting, tree removal, tree survivorship and assessing ecological tree benefits. The Arboriculture Section provides tree care and maintenance in Montgomery Parks countywide and coordinates several programs including tree preservation, green waste recycling, and hazard tree inspection and mitigation. Examples of Important Duties

  • Uses tree inventory software to update tree size, location, and condition on existing landscape trees
  • Collects data on newly planted landscape trees to evaluate tree health and survivorship
  • Inspects newly planted landscape trees to determine need for structure pruning and performs pruning work as needed
  • Uses tree inventory software to update urban forest patch forest stand information on a regular interval including tree species, tree size and condition
  • Assists with implementing forest management strategies in urban forest patches
  • Assists in implementing prescribed work in urban forest patches
  • Assists with inspection for tree preservation on construction sites as needed
  • Performs QA/QC to ensure collected data is error free

Important Skills and Characteristics 

  • Knowledge of horticulture; tools, materials, and equipment used in field; safety; Commission activities, organization, policies and procedures*.
  • Skilled in operation of vehicles; office equipment; personal computer; word processing, spreadsheet, and appropriate software; equipment and tools used in horticulture.
  • Ability to organize work effectively deal effectively with the public; communicate effectively; train and direct the work of volunteers and others; and provide courteous service.

Preferred Qualifications 

  1. Strong tree ID skills.
  2. Experience working with data collection devices and GIS software.
  3. Enjoys working outside.

 

Minimum Qualifications

1. Bachelor’s degree in horticulture or related field; and

2. One year of professional experience in horticulture or closely related field; or

3. An equivalent combination of education and experience.

4. Valid driver’s license.

5. A Maryland State Pesticide Applicator’s License may be required within six months of employment, dependent on assigned duties of the incumbent.
