Fertilizers, manure and sewage all add extra nitrogen to the landscape. As this nitrogen moves through the environment, it becomes nitrate. As excess nitrate makes its way to streams and sources of drinking water via surface runoff or groundwater saturation, it can pose serious problems for the health of humans and the environment.
The good news—You can help!
In 2023, the Izaak Walton League of America launched the Nitrate Watch program to mobilize community scientists nationwide to monitor nitrate pollution in the waterways they rely on.
Visit www.NitrateWatch.org to take the Nitrate Watch Pledge and we will send you a FREE kit containing everything you need to measure nitrate in your drinking water or local waterways.
Each Nitrate Watch kit comes with 25 nitrate test strips, instructions for taking a reading, and instructions to submit your data to our online database, the Clean Water Hub. Monitoring is easy and it takes just 30 seconds!
On our website, you’ll also find educational and advocacy resources, such as webinars, blogs, and fact sheets, template letters to the editor, and more!
