The Elizabeth River Project, one of the oldest environmental nonprofits on the Chesapeake Bay, seeks a part-time, seasonal hire (20 to 28 hours/week) at a rate of $15.00/hr. to work with our River Star Homes team. River Star Homes is a free program in which citizens commit to 7 behavior changes for a cleaner Elizabeth River. The position will run from early February through September 2025. The staff member will work with property owners in the Elizabeth River watershed to implement river-friendly practices, including living shorelines, oyster reefs, rain gardens, and more. RESPONSIBILITIES
The Seasonal Landscape Technician will work directly with the Environmental Project Manager and Environmental Field Foreman as part of our River Star Homes Program. The top priorities will be to 1) implement on-the-ground improvements to help homeowners reduce their environmental impact on the Elizabeth River, including living shorelines, rain gardens, and conservation landscaping. This work includes placing oyster castles, moving sand, soil, or gravel, planting wetland grasses or landscape plants, and helping to maintain installed projects; 2) maintain a safe work environment for all staff and volunteers; 3) educate the public and recruit River Star Homes at outreach events throughout the area; 4) complete additional cross-training as time allows with restoration planning, shoreline permitting, educational events, and more.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Strong customer service skills. Must be prompt and professional at all times.
- Capable of performing tasks in accordance with safety standards and rules.
- Strong team player who shows genuine commitment to the mission of the Elizabeth River Project.
- Has an interest in environmental stewardship and sustainable landscaping practices.
- Comfortable working in different weather conditions as well as within and around water.
- A “can do” positive attitude is essential, including growing from feedback and working closely with a team.
- Basic landscaping capabilities – shoveling, wheelbarrowing, raking, etc.
- Capable of basic tool operation – drill, string trimmer, etc.
- Capable of lifting and carrying objects up to 35 pounds.
- Comfortable working with the public and educating homeowners about best environmental practices.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Must have reliable transportation.
