This year join in the Christmas Bird Count. From December 14 through January 5 each year tens of thousands of volunteers throughout the Americas brave snow, wind, or rain, and take part in this long-standing citizen science project which began in 1900. Audubon and other organizations use data collected in this long-running wildlife census to assess the health of bird populations, and to help guide conservation action.
Janet Millenson and Mike Callahan from the Maryland Ornithological Society will detail the project’s history, interesting data trends in Maryland and elsewhere, share stories of escaping quicksand while birding, and most importantly equip you with the knowledge and tools you need to join the count.
Janet Millenson, DC native and self-described “bird nerd” first participated in a CBC in 1980. This will be here 18th year as the compiler of the Sugarloaf Mountain Christmas Bird County. From 2004 to 2006 she was president of the Maryland Ornithological Society.
NHSM is committed to supporting ongoing research by serving as a citizen scientist pipeline. These presentations are free to attend. You will have the opportunity to donate financially to NHSM during the registration process.
Zoom meeting information will be sent upon registration.
