Greetings Chesapeake Network friends –
T-MINUS FIVE DAYS until the kick-off of the symposium, Our Evolving Food System: from Slavery to Sovereignty! Thank you to everyone who has expressed interest thus far, and we cannot wait to see everyone there next week on October 17-18.
We strongly encourage you to reserve your spots in Eventbrite by Monday, October 15, at which time we will close pre-registration.
Just in case you don’t make the Monday deadline, don’t despair: Limited on-site registration will also be available on both days of the event!
Please note the Thursday, October 18, 9:00AM Keynote by Malik Yakini has moved to the Newcomb Ballroom, 3rd Floor of Newcomb Hall.
Don’t miss this amazing opportunity to listen to the Executive Director of Detroit Black Community Food Security Network.
Malik is a nationally recognized leader working to promote food sovereignty in the Detroit community.
Another not-to-miss event will be our kick-off at the Carver Recreation Center, Wednesday, October 17 at 4PM, led by Kelley Fanto Deetz, author of Bound to the Fire: How Virginia’s Enslaved Cooks Helped Invent American Cuisine. She will be followed at 5:15PM with a food discussion and tasting led by Dr. Leni Sorensen, culinary historian and former African American research historian at Monticello. You won’t ever think about your food heritage the same way!
