Become a Water Quality Monitoring Volunteer and gain hands-on experience collecting data and water samples throughout the District! The goal of the program is to provide up-to-date, weekly water quality data to residents and visitors weekly.

A certified water quality monitoring volunteer helps collect water quality samples from 24 sites weekly from May  September. Anyone can try it out once or sample weekly, it’s up to them!

Sampling is done Wednesday, with Thursday mornings as a backup for inclement weather. Each site is sampled for bacteria, water temperature, air temperature, pH, and turbidity. Do not worry if these terms are unfamiliar; all will be taught in the training.

After attending a training session, attending an in-person demo, and passing a certification test, volunteers can help collect water quality samples.

There are two opportunities, with more to come later in the summer.

Training Session In-person:
Southwest Library, 900 Wesley Pl SW, Washington, DC 20024
Saturday, April 12 at 2pm – 4pm

If anyone wants to learn more, please check out the water monitoring site page, which will have further information where we monitor.

If you have any questions, please reach out to my co-worker Maya Sterett msterett@allianceforthebay.org.
