Explore the world of Smithsonian scientists with educators from the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center. Learn about biodiversity through hands-on activities reflecting real research practices.

June 22nd, Marine Biology- You’ll be collecting data, identifying marine organisms, and examining biodiversity in the Rhode River using microscopes, oyster cages, and seining nets.

July 6th, Watershed Ecology- Join us using microscopes and pond stamping techniques to discover what the presence of specific aquatic insects means for the health of our waterways.

July 20th, Sharks Biology- Learn about sharks and shark anatomy, then discover the types of sharks that inhabit the Chesapeake Bay and Coastal Maryland. You’ll try designing a model tracker and learn how implants are put into sharks.

August 3rd, Forest Ecology- You’ll get to study forests and trees with the same types of equipment that our scientists use, from calipers and tree bands to DBH tapes and dichotomous keys.
