What you will learn: terms, tools, and tricks of the trade for cloud-based GIS tree inventory collection, tree care / consulting, data analysis, and work management.

Workshop Agenda

8:30am –9am: Network over coffee, tea, and light breakfast

9am-9:15am: Presenter Introductions

9:15am-10:00am: Ms. Schrayshuen will be presenting on using the Street Tree Inventory data and GIS data to generate an automated Risk Model. The presentation will use arborist collected street tree observations and tree species information to identify Likelihood of Risk coupled with public available GIS data to calculate Consequence of Risk in a repeatable GIS Model.

10:00am-11:00am: Attendees will learn tree inventory best practices and efficiencies from professionals. This portion of the workshop will be indoors and introduce participants to tree inventory data collection using GPS vs. GIS methods, online and offline modes, map tools, browser & web services technology, and training on data management on a desktop, tablet, or smartphone.

11:15am-12am: The second section will be held outdoors, where participants will learn to access, navigate, view, edit, add, and manage tree data on the cloud from a smartphone or tablet devices and see data updates in real-time. Offline (disconnected) data collection and syncing when on WIFI will also be introduced. Attendees are encouraged to bring a web-enabled device or pair up with someone. Participants will learn how to map tree X/Y coordinates without using GPS, to select a base map with varying conditions and ways to deal with sunlight issues on mobile screens. We will analyze the newly collected data, perform spatial and attribute queries, export data to Excel and GIS formats, and create custom data-driven reports and maps.

12:00pm-12:30pm: Working Lunch with Q&A

12:30pm-1:00pm: Mr. Kellner will give an overview of urban forest management in the City of Bowie and the tools used to manage trees in his community. He will be discussing program workflows and specifications, and the integration of browser-based management software.

*Advanced tools will be introduced, time permitting, such as viewing i-Tree benefits, Tree Protection Zones, tree appraisal values (based on CTLA), work order tracking/automation, and ISA TRAQ forms/fields.

We will be using Tree Plotter, our inventory and data management software, to demonstrate the power of using technology for urban forest management

About the Presenters

Chris Peiffer is an ISA Certified Arborist based in Plan-It Geo’s Harrisburg, PA office. He has a Bachelors degree in Urban Forestry, and his professional background includes forestry, urban forest management, green infrastructure planning and GIS. Chris is a graduate of the Municipal Forestry Institute, Urban Forestry Institute, and Urban Forest Strike Team Training. At Plan-It Geo, Chris provides expertise in project management, business development, technical writing, and consultation in the areas of urban forest management and green infrastructure planning.
Beth Schrayshuen is a licensed PE with more than 10 years of experience working for various sanitary sewer and stormwater utilities and public works departments. Ms. Schrayshuen’s work has focused on asset management and inventory generation to assist with operations and permit compliance for public works departments. She earned her Bachelors of Science in Environmental Engineering and Masters of Science in Civil Engineering from State University of New York at Buffalo.
Rick Kellner is the Community Forester for the City of Bowie, MD, working with community members and businesses to maintain the city’s urban forest. Rick manages over 17,000 street trees, and as well as parks and other city facility trees and landscapes. Rick is an ISA Certified Arborist and TRAQ qualified, a MD Certified Professional Horticulturist, and is licensed as a MD Tree Expert and MD Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicator.
