While the ecosystem benefits of oysters have included the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus from nutrient enriched Chesapeake Bay waters, quantification of this benefit is often limited by field and laboratory measurements. In this presentation, we will discuss how oysters remove nitrogen and phosphorus, identify the water quality benefits of both aquaculture and oyster reef restoration, and present our initial data on the nutrient removal potential of engineered structures such as reef balls and oyster castles. Thank you to the Palmer Foundation for providing funds that make this research possible.
