What is a Greenhouse Gas Inventory and who Needs One Anyway?

Everyone knows that climate change is happening.  The world is getting hotter, and there are many ill effects.  The main driver of climate change is the greenhouse effect. Some gases in the Earth’s atmosphere act a bit like the glass in a greenhouse, trapping the sun’s heat and stopping it from leaking back into space and causing global warming.  We measure the impact of a person, a business, an organization, a country, or any other entity with a greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory.  A greenhouse gas inventory quantifies the amount of heat-trapping gases released by human sources within a defined boundary over the course of a year.  However, most people don’t really know how this is done.  Come join us as we learn about how a GHG inventory is made.  We will discuss what information is needed, how the calculations are made, and understand what we can do with the data once we have it.  Mr.Lord was a Contributing Author of The Greenhouse Gas Protocol for the U.S. Public Sector; published by The World Resources Institute; LCC# 2010937208; 2010.  Since then, he has calculated and published the GHG inventories for two of the three largest school divisions in Virginia for more than a decade.  If you always wanted to know, but never took the time to find out, this could be your opportunity.”
