For those of you that may not know, Irvine Nature Center is home to a reconstructed Native American site that was built in partnership with the Baltimore American Indian Center, Stevenson University, and various local experts. One of these local experts is an Interpretive Naturalist, Jeff Gottlieb, who was responsible for building the wigwams and longhouse that we have at the site. He’s constructed more than 60 full scale wigwam and longhouse replicas at various locations along the East Coast. Every year, Jeff drives up from his home in the Great Smoky Mountains to spend a week on Irvine’s property making improvements to the structures and maintaining our Native American site. This year, Jeff will be on property for two weeks instead of one and this visit will be busier than most.
Rather than repairs, Jeff will be focusing on dismantling the current longhouse and fully rebuilding a new longhouse in its place. We could really use all the help we can get! We’re searching for volunteers to join us between the dates of Tuesday, May 31st – Friday, June 8th to learn more about our site and assist with this project. We’re hosting both morning sessions (9:30am – 12:30pm) and afternoon sessions (1:00 – 4:00pm) over the two week period. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old, be able to lift a minimum of 25 lbs., and be comfortable working outdoors.
