Join Maryland Department of Natural Resources and UMD Sea Grant Extension for a 2 hour training to learn about the updated sea level rise projections, the sea level rise guidance document, and how to use these resources in project planning, project prioritization, and proposal review.

Who should attend: Coastal decision makers, in particular Maryland state agencies and local governments, working on flooding and coastal resilience issues.

Participants will:

  • Develop a common understanding of coastal flood impacts and sea level rise and utilize Maryland specific resources.
  • Understand the MD Nuisance Flood Plan mandate (October 2025), learn about the updated recommendations and determine how those apply to your jurisdiction.
  • Become familiar with the Maryland 2023 Sea Level Rise Projections and how to use the 2024 MD Sea Level Rise Guidance Document to plan for future impacts.
  • Explore case studies to understand, plan, and implement projects to reduce the impacts of coastal flood risk
  • Understand potential funding sources to plan for and implement projects that address current and future flood impacts.

Each training will include concurrent break out sessions where participants will have the opportunity to dive deeper on a specific topic related to coastal flooding. Topics will include:

  • Tools for Visualizing Flood Impacts in your Community: Walk through specific examples and use both state and federal tools to visualize flood impacts and elevate your planning processes.
  • MyCoast MD & Nuisance Flood Plans: Use MyCoast MD reports to analyze the impacts of flood events and a deeper dive into the 2025 Nuisance Flood Plan update
  • New Critical Area Program Requirements: Incorporating Climate Resiliency and Equity into Critical Area Programs.
  • Applying the CoastSmart Law: Examine the requirements of the Coastsmart Construction Program and how it applies to state and local capital projects.
  • Community Action Around Flooding: We’ll share existing resources to support individual action around flooding, brainstorm resource needs, and discuss best practices for outreach and engagement with different communities.
  • Planning for Wetland Migration: Prioritizing restoration and conservation using maps of projected land-use change.
  • Nature Based Solutions and designing for SLR: Explore different nature based adaptation solutions and how to incorporate high tide flooding and sea level rise into designs and plan for adaptive management.
