For 12 years, the Choose Clean Water Coalition has been responsible for ensuring the coordination of policy, advocacy, and messaging that advance the goals of the Chesapeake Bay restoration community. Reporting to the Choose Clean Water Coalition’s Senior Communications Manager, the Communications Intern will coordinate the Coalition’s civic engagement work around the 2022 election, while advancing the communications capacity of Coalition members. The Communications Intern will also manage communications needs of the Coalition, including updating social media pages, the website and blog, and the monthly newsletter. A part-time paid internship, this is a great opportunity for someone who is interested in gaining work experience in nonprofit communications and outreach. This position is located in NWF’s Mid-Atlantic Regional Center in Annapolis, Maryland; however, we are considering candidates throughout the Chesapeake Bay watershed (due to COVID-19, all NWF employees are working remotely until we make return to work decisions).

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead the Coalition’s election-focused civic engagement work through the compilation and production of resources, distribution of resources, and coordination of trainings.
  • Assist with the coordination of events to improve the communications capacity of Coalition member organizations.
  • Help manage the social media platforms for the Coalition and execute an overall social media strategy.
  • Contribute to and manage blog calendar for Coalition website.
  • Assist with creation and distribution of monthly e-newsletter to Coalition members.
  • Support Coalition members in their communication needs by providing feedback and support for campaigns as needed.
  • Provide additional office support to the Coalition workgroups, Coalition Director, and Senior Policy and Campaigns Manager as needed.

Minimum Qualifications and Core Competencies

  • Experience with social media platforms and knowledge of social media trends.
  • Ability to communicate positions and build public awareness.
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills, including strong copy-editing skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize work, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work effectively with a broad base of Coalition groups and people from diverse backgrounds.

Desired, but Not Required, Experience and Skills

  • Experience with software for design, photo editing, video editing, and web publishing.
  • Experience in a mission-driven non-profit organization.
  • Passion for the environment and knowledge of threats to clean water.

Travel Requirements:

Up to two days per month throughout the Chesapeake Bay Watershed (New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, District of Columbia, Virginia, West Virginia), in accordance with COVID safety protocols.

Compensation:

This position pays $17.00 an hour for up to 24 hours a week with paid holidays from June–December.

This is a paid short-term internship opportunity with the National Wildlife Federation. NWF is happy to work with the applicant to obtain relevant credit(s) through college/university programming, such as directed independent study (DIS), internship credit hours, etc. Applicant should indicate if they intend to pursue this in application letter. The work schedule is flexible to accommodate your class schedule.
