Summary
ESLC seeks qualified candidates for the full-time position of Coastal Resilience Specialist. The successful candidate will help ESLC build regional capacity for climate adaptation and resilience by deploying significant skill, wisdom, and experience to assist communities in planning for climate impacts and implementing adaptation and resilience strategies.
The Coastal Resilience Specialist will work with internal and external partners to deliver the strategic priorities of the Eastern Shore Land Conservancy, serving on project teams and in other roles as assigned by the Leadership Team. The Specialist will bring substantial expertise, networks, experience, and creative thinking to the design, implementation, and evolution of projects and programs. The Specialist will be team-oriented, self-motivating, and reflective, providing constructive advice, owning failures, celebrating successes, and committed to ESLC’s mission, vision, and values. Importantly, the Specialist will be capable of allocating time and resources to further the resilience and vibrancy of the Eastern Shore.

Essential qualifications:
• Undergraduate degree and experience relevant to climate mitigation and adaptation;
• Professional interests that align strongly with ESLC’s vision and values;
• Exceptional written communication skills; able to write persuasively for public audiences; able to write professionally for grantmakers, elected leaders, and internal audiences;
• Outstanding verbal and interpersonal communication skills; able to speak about ESLC in an articulate, compelling, and professional manner in one-on-one, group, and public settings;
• Desire and demonstrated ability to identify and address personal knowledge gaps; to learn on the job; and to cultivate sources of knowledge, expertise, and skill;
• Skill in giving and receiving constructive, timely feedback with supervisors, colleagues, and partners;
• Able and willing to travel (including a vehicle) frequently among the six counties in ESLC’s service area and periodically beyond the service area; overnight travel is typically 4 nights or less per year.
Preferred qualifications:
• Graduate degree or 3-5 years’ experience in community planning; floodplain or stormwater management; hazard mitigation or emergency management planning; geographic information systems; renewable energy; environmental management; public administration; or similar field;
• Experience in managing multiple, simultaneous projects with complex partners, stakeholders, objectives, deliverables, and timelines; ability to plan, marshal resources, and execute in order to meet demanding timelines;
• Experience with local government and a commitment to strengthening rural communities;
• Desire to contribute to and lead high-performing teams and partnerships; ability to run effective and efficient meetings that achieve clearly defined objectives and outcomes;
• Track record of successful grant writing;
• Comfort with technology; skill with geographic information systems is a plus.
Key functions:
• Provides expertise, support, and coordination for community and regional resilience-building efforts:
– Coordination and support of coastal resilience and climate adaptation projects; management responsibility for specific project components;
– Support ESLC’s leadership and facilitative role in the Eastern Shore Climate Adaptation Partnership (ESCAP);
– Written and verbal public communications and outreach that builds awareness of and support for adaptation and resilience;
– Represent ESLC, the ESCAP, and rural communities in local, regional, and state networks;
– Support ESLC’s renewable energy initiative via networking, dialogue, and problem solving;
– Contribute to grant writing and reporting.
•Supports ESLC’s Land Conservation, Center for Towns, rural prosperity, and advancement programs:
– Provide content knowledge and skill to ESLC’s programs and projects as appropriate;
– Share and receive timely, constructive advice and feedback;
– Contribute to deliverables and timelines in a collaborative, respectful manor.
