THIS RECRUITMENT WILL ESTABLISH AN ELIGIBLE LIST TO FILL ONE (1) INTERN VACANCY IN THE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION. THE POSITION IS TEMPORARY AND PART-TIME AND DOES NOT INCLUDE BENEFITS.
The part-time hourly pay rate is $19.56 per hour. Employee will work 16 to 24 hours per week.

DEP is seeking a Public Services Intern to support the Stream Monitoring Section. The Stream Monitoring Intern will gain hands-on experience and exposure to biological monitoring protocols while part of the team assessing stream health in Montgomery County for up to 24 hours per week for the summer and fall semesters. The intern will spend considerable time outside working with staff collecting biological, physiochemical, geomorphic and habitat data in various locations throughout the county. The experience gained in data analysis, GIS and database systems will be applied to available data to produce and assist in the characterization of the Montgomery County watersheds. Upon successful completion, individuals will understand the concepts, principles and procedures used by the County to assess stream health. Knowledge of procedures will be demonstrated by field audits or tests while feedback to the intern will be provided during bi-weekly meetings.
This position requires possession of a valid driver’s license and the ability to drive a County vehicle to transport biological, geomorphic, water quality, and stream hydrology monitoring equipment and conduct monitoring site visits at various locations throughout Montgomery County that may not be accessible via public transportation.
The work entails field work in streams around Montgomery County. The work is primarily performed out-of-doors, along stream banks and in streams and ponds, and may involve deep or swiftly moving water. It also requires light physical effort such as walking over rough, uneven, slippery, or rocky surfaces; bending, crouching, stooping, stretching or reaching; and occasional lifting of objects.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: None
Education: Completion of two (2) years of college course work (60 credit hours or its academic equivalent) in the following areas of study: Biology, Aquatic Biology, Limnology, Chemistry, Conservation Biology, Ecology, Environmental Biology, Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Environmental Toxicology, Geographic Information Science and Cartography, Geology/Earth Science, Geotechnical and Geo-environmental Engineering, Natural Resources Management and Policy, Natural Resources/Conservation, Physical Science, Soil Microbiology, Sustainability Studies, Water Quality and Wastewater Treatment Management and Recycling Technology/Technician.
Equivalency: An equivalent combination of education or experience may be substituted.
License: Possession and maintenance at all times of a valid driver’s license from the applicant’s state of residence.
Medical Exam Protocol: Selected candidate(s) will be required to successfully complete a Medical History Review prior to appointment.
