The Anne Arundel County Forestry Board administers the Anne Arundel Weed Resistance, a assembly of volunteers committed to reducing invasive plant species in our forests. Parcels of forest land throughout the County are being negatively affected by invasive plant species that are degrading habitat and destroying the advanced regeneration necessary for the forests to thrive and be sustainable. There is also a negative effect on the county waterways. The Volunteer Maryland AmeriCorps Member will recruit 100 volunteers who will participate in clearing invasive vegetation from forests and natural areas throughout Anne Arundel County. Volunteers will also be involved with planting trees and shrubs to enhance the forest ecosystem. In addition, the AmeriCorps Member will supervise volunteers on work days and lead volunteer events with and without a staff member. The AmeriCorps Member will also work with staff to create a volunteer tracking system, volunteer application, position descriptions, recruitment and screening materials. The AmeriCorps Member will develop and refine volunteer orientation, agenda and training materials and work with staff on recognition plans and materials.
This is an 11 month, full-time (40 hours/week) position as a member of the Volunteer Maryland (VM) AmeriCorps program serving at the Anne Arundel County Forestry Board. AmeriCorps Members are responsible for maintaining the growth of the volunteer program as agreed to in the VM site partnership negotiations that occurred in spring, 2018. The AmeriCorps Member service year will begin on September 6, 2018 and conclude on July 31, 2019; Volunteer Maryland Coordinators are expected to complete 1,700 hours of service during the term.
