Casey Trees is an urban forestry nonprofit located in Washington DC. Our mission is to restore, enhance, and protect the tree canopy of our nation’s capital (and surrounding areas) and we work towards achieving our mission through tree planting, education, community action and land preservation.

Summary

The Youth Programs Manger oversees, leads, and executes school ground tree plantings, STEM based environmental education lessons, summer youth programs, after school educational curriculum and related tasks. This position is community based and community facing, requiring direct and consistent interactions with diverse stakeholders across the educational field. The incumbent serves as a member of the Education Team, ensuring educational outcomes that promote Casey Trees’ mission of restoring, enhancing, and protecting the tree canopy of the nation’s capital and the surrounding jurisdictions.

Essential Functions:

The following functions are representative of the Youth Programs Manager including, but not limited to:

Program Management

  • Manages the youth education staffer(s) by preparing workplans and reports on staff performance including performance evaluations, and regular feedback as needed
  • Prioritizes and coordinates with partners and schools aligning with CT’s plan to engage at risk youth and Title I schools to implement programming – both in formal classroom settings as well as during after hour engagements and school year breaks
  • Maintains relationships with external partners at schools and other agencies/organizations to continue youth programming
  • Manages the lesson planning, scheduling, and program delivery for a variety of grant-based commitments and restricted donor commitments as well as CT organizational priorities
  • Collaborates on school tree planting plans involving students, adults, and youth in varied settings
  • Maintains data records on programs and events to strengthen future programming
  • Tracks youth budget items
  • Contributes to youth grant and contract management
  • Regularly reports on status updates for youth programs
  • Collaborates with Director on future planning and provides logistical support during other trainings, events, classes, workshops, tours, etc.

Content Development

  • Updates, maintains, and develops relevant curriculum content for lessons with environmental education objectives
  • Creates clear lesson outlines and works with teachers or designer on format
  • Maintains and understands education standards across states (like Next Generation Science Standards-NGSS)

Instruction 

  • Instructs participants in classroom and outdoor inquiry-based learning activities (K-12)
  • Leads informal community programs that include youth/family audiences
  • Facilitates and maintains training in programs like Meaningful Watershed Education Experiences (MWEE’s) and other environmental education programs
  • Assists in training other educators and CT staff on how to implement environmental education- focused on trees, forestry, nursery production, education, and other focus areas of the organization.

Other

  • Helps support, assist, coordinate, and at times lead adult, family, and other programming across the organization as needed and necessary
  • Perform, manage, and conduct Outreach tasks as needed
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Connects people to trees

Supervisory Responsibilities 

The incumbent manages the Youth education staffers.

Working Conditions 

Work is done both indoors (office, classrooms, rec centers) and outside year-round in the heat, cold and inclement weather.

The incumbent in this position typically uses the following equipment: 

  • Computers, printers, copiers, smartphones, tablets, walkie-talkies, telephones
  • Automobiles, trucks, vans
  • Tree planting equipment such as: shovels, pickaxe, knife, stake driver, buckets, wire cutters, containerized trees, hand pruners, etc.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent will occasionally be required to stand; walk; sit; use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear.  The incumbent is frequently required to sit, talk, and hear. The incumbent is occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The incumbent will assist in digging holes and with lifting and planting trees. In the office environment, this position would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bending, or standing on a stool as necessary.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time community-based position, 40 hours a week. The incumbent must be able and willing to work evenings, weekends, and extended hours when needed.

Travel

Travel is primarily local to the greater Washington, DC region including daily and overnight travel to Casey Tree Farm in Berryville, VA. Some out of the area travel and overnights may be expected.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental education, arboriculture, horticulture, urban forestry, environmental studies, science, or K-12 teaching degree with a focus on STEM
  • Valid driver’s license, clean driving record, willingness to sign CT’s driving policy
  • Eligible to be cleared to work in public, private, and charter schools in the Washington, DC region
  • Willing to receive and maintain CPR and first aid certification
  • Professionalism and flexibility when communicating with a wide range of stakeholders
  • Strong project management skills and ability to execute multiple ongoing projects
  • Excellent time management and punctuality
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Experience in managerial duties
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Four or more years of experience in an urban setting facilitating youth environmental education (both informal and formal)
  • Certification in Environmental Education Standards (like NAAEE)
  • Two or more years of experience in nonprofit sector
  • Proficiency in Salesforce
